A Namibian work visa grants employment authorisation to foreign nationals. The visa will specify the following:
- Time period allocated for the specific activity.
- Description of the persons authorised to work.
- Employer details.
- The foreign national’s professional occupation.
The main visa categories are Short Term visas and Long Term visas:
Short Term visas
A Short Term visa is valid for 90 days and can be extended once more. The applicant may apply while outside of Namibia.
It is important that the applicant has a tertiary qualification in line with their occupation. Namibia’s Department of Home Affairs insists on this.
Long Term visas
A Long Term visa is for foreign nationals who want to work in Namibia for 7 months or longer. These visas are usually issued for between 1 and 2 years.
The Namibian employer has to be able to prove that all reasonable efforts were made to first employ a Namibian national. For this reason the position has to be advertised in a local Namibian newspaper.
Namibian business visas
A Namibian business visa is intented for persons who travel to Namibia to attend:
- Business prospection missions.
- Business meetings.
- Corporate events.
- Official government visits.
- Trade fairs.
- Short training courses (no longer than 90 days).
A business visa does not allow the holder to:
- Take up any employment in Namibia.
- Do on-site work at a third party.
- Take on any activity where remuneration is received.
Namibian immigration regulations state that business visas are single entry visas valid for a maximum of up to 90 days per annum. However, practice shows that business visas are usually only issued for 14 days at a time.
